The Painted Pot: Line, Color, Imagery
Welcome to what will be a legendary WORKSHOP! Exquisite talent, unique technique and original approach, both Bede Clarke and Jessica Brandl are forces in their own rights and complementary at the same time.
Be immersed in this 3-day intensive hands-on workshop exploring both wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery/sculpture, and drawing/painting on clay with a focus on building a personal approach to form and imagery/design (abstract and representational).
Students are encouraged to bring sketches, visual resources and ideas for imagery they would like to explore.

Bede Clarke is a Professor Emeritus, University of Missouri, having taught at Missouri 1992- 2021. He received his MFA from the University of Iowa (1990) and a BFA from Eckerd College (1982). Bede maintains a studio in Columbia, Missouri where he continues to create and exhibit his work.

Demonstrations, power-point lectures and group discussion in this workshop will focus on basic forming and painting skills, but more, we will look to discover the potential of a curious and sensitive dialogue between the artist, the pot/sculpture, line, color and imagery.

Demonstrations, power-point lectures and group discussion in this workshop will focus on basic forming and painting skills, but more, we will look to discover the potential of a curious and sensitive dialogue between the artist, the pot/sculpture, line, color and imagery.
Forms created will be decorated with a direct and simple approach to painting with an earthenware underglaze. The technique is suitable for single-firing.
Technically, we will cover earthenware clays, slips and glazes, the use of colored slips/engobes for painting on pots and sculptural form, and approaches to imagery. Suitable for beginning – advanced levels, or, for drawing/painting students wishing to crossover into clay work.

Set in landscapes with looming architecture, turbulent skies, and misplaced objects, Brandl’s work exposes historical and eccentric places engulfed in psychological scenarios - both sinister and sublime.
Jessica Brandl received her MFA from The Ohio State University and BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. She is the recipient of awards including the Visiting McKnight Resident Artist, Windgate Scholar and the Rudy Autio inspiration Grant. She Currently resides in Kalamazoo Michigan where she is an Assistant Professor at Western Michigan University.
Lodging is available on the 2nd floor of the Morean Workshop Space featuring private sleeping quarters, shared restrooms, large-communal kitchen and plenty of space to spread out!
