Demonstrations, power-point lectures and group discussion in this workshop will focus on  basic forming and painting skills, but more, we will look to discover the potential of a curious  and sensitive dialogue between the artist, the pot/sculpture, line, color and imagery.

Forms  created will be decorated with a direct and simple approach to painting with an earthenware  underglaze. The technique is suitable for single-firing.

Technically, we will cover earthenware clays, slips and glazes, the use of colored slips/engobes  for painting on pots and sculptural form, and approaches to imagery. Suitable for beginning –  advanced levels, or, for drawing/painting students wishing to crossover into clay work.

What to Bring:

Since this is a hand-on workshop in which students may be making new work or simply painting on green-ware and bisque-ware, actual student needs will be quite varied. Following are  some thoughts on what students might want to bring to pursue their individual work:

  •  Spray water bottle
  • Brushes – A variety - these should be soft rather than stiff brushes.
  • Liner Brushes for fine line work (#1 is finest, #2 next fine, etc. Simply Simmons is a good  inexpensive liner brush)
  •  Palette tray (or we can provide paper plates) – for mixing colors
  •  Your favorite forming tools
  •  Towels/sponges
  •  Visual reference materials, sketches, doodles, any other reference sources
  •  A small tupperware container for slip
