3-Day Metal Box Making Workshop: How to Hold a Memory


Join Gainesville, Florida based Metal Artist Leslie Tharp for an amazing 3-day workshop, working together learning the basics of metalworking, including forging, shaping and more!


This expressive metalworking workshop will exercise our narrative minds and focus our efforts on creating a precious box to contain a story, memory, or intention.  


Box accessories will be riveted on and patinas will be applied to complete this functional work of art. 


$795/person for the full 3-day workshop

All safety gear is provided. NO experience is required. 


Limited to 6 participants

Cancellation fee: $100

WHAT TO EXPECT

1-Day Drop-In Option (Saturday ONLY)

WHAT TO EXPECT

 Participants will create texture and imagery in ferrous and non ferrous metals using both hot working and cold working techniques. 


Hammers will be dancing as we exercise our imaginations to bring our projects to life!


Day 1:  Students will develop imagery that brings their projects to life - We'll explore hot forged techniques to create textures surfaces and box latches.  


Day 2: Focusing on Copper Repoussee Techniques


Day 3:  Our projects are taking shape, and now it's time to tie up loose ends. Students will finalize their box panels, rivet together components and add finishing touches with chemical patinas and oil.

Copper Repoussee Class


1-Day Copper Forming Class


Saturday will focus on copper repousse and one-day participants are invited to join the group and explore the technique of cold hammering copper sheet metal to create a vivid imagery and abstract design. These experiments can be transformed into necklace pendants, wall mounted artwork, and belt buckles.

Meet Nationally acclaimed metal artist, Leslie Tharp:

About the Artist

Based in Gainesville, FL metal artist Leslie Tharp specializes in large scale public art and teaching hands on metalworking classes. Her blacksmithing training began at Penland School of Craft, where Tharp received a work study scholarship in the Iron Studio.

Beyond Tharp's role as a maker is her role as a teacher:

"I love to teach! It’s built on my own love of learning and eagerness to share. I aim to create a very inclusive and motivating environment for students as they begin their journey into metalworking."


Leslie's work can be seen in public and private collections around the country.
