Focusing on hand building techniques using coils and slabs, Karina Mago creates abstracted figural works that defy gravity and harness the flames in a wood firing kiln.
During this 3-day workshop, Mago will share all of the tips and tricks that she has developed over the course of her career in order to create elegant yet expressive figurative works.
Participants will be shown a variety of hand building methods to create both pedestal and wall hanging pieces of art. We will also explore different construction, alteration and firing tips to ensure that the dreaded cracking, warping, and slumping remain as a preventive nightmarish tale and not a reality.
The techniques shared during this workshop are universal and can be applied to a vast range of ideas. All who are enthusiastic about creating with clay are welcome regardless of experience level.
The workshop participants will be encouraged to devise a project idea, and together we will bring this idea into fruition. She will also discuss her preferred firing techniques, and describe the importance of making informed decisions when it comes to choosing between ceramic materials, clays, firing methods, etc.

“My work is informed by my experiences as a Venezuelan immigrant; one who, like many, has lost the ability to both physically and emotionally return to her place of origin because she no longer belongs there. An individual whose fate was sealed by a decaying government that has ignored the needs of its citizens, while feasting on unceremoniously earned riches. I make in order to cope with that sense of loss of place, but also to celebrate the fact that I was lucky enough to escape."
